Biography

Javier Nero is a young Jazz Trombonist, composer and arranger whose musicianship is already receiving significant recognition. Mr. Nero won first place at the 2011 international Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Competition and recently won 1st prize in the ITA’s 2013 JJ Johnson Competition.

Mr. Nero’s compositions and arrangements have also received commendation. In 2010 he was selected to be a part of the annual Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program led by the late Billy Taylor. This program’s participants were selected from a pool of musicians between ages 16-30 based upon their skills as performers and composers. Through this program Nero was fortunate to work with artists such as: Billy Taylor, Curtis Fuller, George Cables, Carmen Lundy, Winard Harper and many others. Mr. Nero has also been awarded 2 Downbeat Student Music Awards over the years for his arrangements of Bemsha Swing and Little Sunflower. Most recently Mr. Nero participated in the 2013 Banff Jazz and Creative music workshop where he studied under: Vijay Iyer, Greg Osby, Ravi Coltrane, Theo Bleckman, Esperanza Spalding and many others.

Mr. Nero recently completed his Bachelor of Music degree at the Juilliard School in New York City where he studied under trombone artists Steve Turre and Conrad Herwig. During his time at Juilliard he was able to perform with several iconic Jazz artists including: Benny Golson, Frank Wess, Joe Lovano, Terence Blanchard, Mulgrew Miller, and Christian McBride. Mr. Nero has also performed at the premier venues, The Apollo Theater, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and The Blue-Note as well as lead groups that performed at Jazz At Lincoln Center, Smalls and The Garage. Nero is currently working towards a master’s degree in Studio Engineering and Jazz Composition at the University of Miami, where he has gained experience scoring for film, studio orchestra, and large jazz ensemble (big band). Although only a first year grad student, Nero has had the opportunity to write and have his compositions performed by the University of Miami’s Concert Jazz Band. His arrangement of All Blues/CC Rider was recently performed and recorded for Blue-Note records by the CJB alongside guitarist/vocalist Steve Miller.
